Installation Instructions 5-August-2008 For Ubuntu Users 1. Install the gDesklets framework if it is not already present on your system. The framework can be downloaded and installed from the gDesklets site at http://www.gdesklets.de/ or by using the "Synaptic Package Manager" utility located in System->Administration. If you use the Synaptic Package Manager utility, search for gDesklets, mark it for instalation and press apply to install it. 2. Download the Xirrus gDesklet from the Wi-Fi Tools section of the Xirrus web site at http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php. 3. Open gDesklets from Applications->Accessories. Go to File and select "Install package...", browse for the Xirrus gDesklet file and press Open to install. 4. gDesklets will install directly into the gDesklets database, and you should be able to see it right away or choose it from the Misc/Utilities or System/Net categories. 5. Double-Click the "Xirrus Wi-Fi Monitor" desklet 6. Place the widget on your screen 7. Enter your super-user password (for better scanning results) or press cancel -------------- For Fedora Users 1. If you use the Add/Remove Software utility, search for gDesklets, selecting it from the list and press apply to install it. 2. Install the gDesklets framework if it is not already present on your system. The framework can be downloaded and installed from the gDesklets site at http://www.gdesklets.de/ or by using the YaST packages selector. If you want to use YaST, you must know that the gDesklets packages are not installed by default with openSUSE Linux so a few steps need to be followed before gDekslets can be used. 1.1. Configure the openSUSe package management system so that it access the repository containing the gDesklets packages. This is currently the openSUSE Builde Service GNOME:STABLE repository. To add this to the list of active repositories click on Computer in the panel at the bottom of the desktop and select Control Center from the panel. 1.2. In the Control Center scroll down the list of options until you reach the YaST option. Click on this to invoke the YaST tool. In YaST scroll down to the Community Repositories option in the Software group and click on it. 1.3. In the Community Repositories set the check box next to openSUSE Builde Service GNOME:STABLE and click Finish. The new repository will be added to the system. 1.4. Select Manage Software from the YaST control center and enter "gdesklets" into the search box. Check for install and press the accept button. 2. Download the Xirrus gDesklet from the Wi-Fi Tools section of the Xirrus web site at http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php. 3. Open gDesklets from Applications->Accessories. Go to File and select "Install package...", browse for the Xirrus gDesklet file and press Open to install. 4. gDesklets will install directly into the gDesklets database, and you should be able to see it right away or choose it from the Misc/Utilities or System/Net categories. 5. Enter your super-user password (for better scanning results) or press cancel ================= Upgrade information To manually upgrade the the Linux desklet, do the following: 1. Close gDesklets 2. Go to your home folder /home/UserName/.gdesklets/ and delete the Controls and Displays folders. 3. Restart gDesklets 4. Select File->"Install Package..." and browse for the Xirrus gDesklet file and press Open to install. ================= Tips 1. To reduce CPU utilization of the widget, increase the Polling Interval (from Preferences window) and/or select "None" for the Sweep Type on the Preferences window. 2. From the "Interface" tab in Configuration options select "Persistent Wireless Information" if you wish to buffer the wireless networks found in range. ============== Known Issues 1. For Fedora users the super-user mode is not functional 2. On some chipsets CCMP encryption is not visible. Please update your wireless card driers. 3. In some cases the widget controller does not install automatically upon widget installation. In this case you must install the controller by hand. (move the IXirrusWifiMonitor folder from /home/YourUserName/.gdesklets/Displays/SomeName/controls/ to /home/YourUserName/.gdesklets/Controls/
