Greensburg School District Deploys Xirrus High-Performance Wi-Fi Arrays






At 9:45 p.m. on May 4, 2007, an F5 class tornado traveled rapidly though Greensburg, Kansas destroying at least 95 percent of the city, including all of the district's schools, and killing 12 people. The tornado was estimated to be 1.7 miles wide and traveled nearly 22 miles with wind speeds reaching 205 mph. Darrin Headrick, superintendent of the Greensburg Unified School District, declared that students in the area would have a school by August. Within four months, the city constructed a school consisiting of 14 temporary buildings where 74% of Greensburg's student population would attend for the 2007/2008 school year. The Wi-Fi network provided by Xirrus would provide internet access for the students, faculty, and school staff allowing them to conduct research and enrichment activities using 200 new tablet computers.
