Tambov State University was founded in 1994 on the basis of Tambov State Pedagogical Institute and Tambov State Institute of Culture. The University combines both training highly skilled specialists in humanities and natural sciences and the realization of serious research work. TSU is a classical type university and the second largest university in the Central Chernozyom Region of Russia with over 10,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. TSU has 63 departments and 30 research centers and laboratories. Academic staff consists of about 650, half of whom are doctors and candidates of sciences. Among the professors of the University there are members of the New York Academy of Sciences, International Slavonic Academy of Sciences, Education, Arts and Culture, Academy of Natural Sciences, Academy of Social Sciences, Academy of the Humanities, International Association of Social Workers, holders of the State scientific grant "To Outstanding Scientists of Russia," and Honoured Scientists of Russian Federation. Many of TSU's professors have been awarded personal grants of various Russian and International Foundations and Governmental Agencies.
